Swachh Sagar Surakhit Sagar
Recently, the Ministry of Earth Sciences has started a
Coastal Cleanup Campaign to clean 75 beaches across the country in 75 days
under the Swachh Sagar, Safe Sagar campaign.
Clean ocean, safe ocean campaign
Introduction: It is the first of its kind and the longest running coastal clean-up campaign in the world, with the largest number of people participating.
The campaign will culminate on the "International
Coastal Cleanup Day" (17 September 2022).
The purpose of this day is to raise public awareness about
the accumulation of litter on the oceans, beaches and its negative effects.
Globally, "International Coastal Cleanup Day" is
observed every year on the third Saturday of September.
Through this campaign, the aim of massive behavior change
among people is to raise awareness about how the use of plastic is destroying
marine life.
A mobile app “Eco Mitram” has been launched to spread
awareness about this campaign and to register the general public for voluntary
participation in the beach cleaning activity.
Importance of clean ocean:
The ocean is an important source of nutrition, especially
for people in the world's poorest countries.
With large numbers of people dependent on primary food
sources such as fish for protein, fisheries and aquaculture directly or
indirectly support the livelihoods of approximately 540 million people (8% of
the world's population).
Excessive fishing, loss of biodiversity and possible
extinction of species have put pressure on these limited resources. This can
lead to famine, poverty, and war and conflict.
Sustainable management of the ocean is the only solution to
global prosperity and peace.
0bjectives: Running a cleanliness campaign along
India’s entire coastline. To reduce marine litter. Minimising the use of
plastics. Encouraging segregation of waste at source and waste management.
According
to the Prime Minister’s global initiative on the “lifestyle for environment
(LiFE) Movement,” which calls for human-centric and collaborative efforts to
boost sustainable development, the goal is to target lifestyle and behavioural
changes that support environmental sustainability through Swachh Sagar,
Surakshit Sagar campaign.
