Environmental auditing is a challenge to provide information on the environmental performance of a company, and thus include environmental issues in the decision-making process. In other words, Environmental auditing is an environmental management activity performed by the industries or organizations.

An environmental audit assesses the nature and extent of harm to the environment caused by the activities, wastes or noise from a specific company.

Whenever any industries produce anything in their production lines, it ultimately effects the environment. So, Government makes many provisions related to industry or company that whatever product they made will not affecting the environment means eco-friendly products should be made instead of polluted product.

 For example, while do environmental audit, if there is machinery in the industry which worked for a lot of years and create a huge amount of pollution in the environment and industry didn’t change it. So, industry have to pay charges or fine in form of punishment to create pollution to the Government.

Background of Environmental Audit

Environmental auditing originated in the United States in the 1970’s in order to check that company or industry is follows the environmental laws and regulations. Environmental audit assessing a company environmental management systems (EMS), policy and equipment. It is necessary to have environmental audit to ensure sustainable industrial development.

It provides the company with recommendations on how it can improve its environmental management practices, and reduce the greater impact of environmental effect.

There are two standards of International standards organization (ISO) which defines environmental audit.

1.)    ISO 14000: - This standard is related to the environmental management that exits to help organizations by minimize the operations negatively affects the environment. It can be used by any organization that wants to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste and reduce costs.

2.)    ISO 14001: - This standard is deal with Environmental management system (EMS) which provide assurance to company management and employees as well as external stakeholders that environmental impact is being measured and enhanced.
